SAFETY

Who can find you, and what they see.

Showing strangers where you live is not a small thing, so this is off until you turn it on.

Your three settings

You will find these on the You page, under Availability.

SettingWhat it does
OffThe default. Nobody can find you or start a new chat. Chats you already have keep working.
MembersPeople in a group you share can see your name and start a chat.
PublicThose people, and anyone searching within the distance you set, from 1 km to 25 km. It starts at 1.5 km.

What people can see on Public

Your name, and about how far away you are, rounded up to the next 250 metres. Your position is stored rounded to about 250 metres and is never shown. When you turn Public off, it is removed. If your phone has not updated it for 7 days, it stops counting.

Rounding means nobody can find your door. It does not hide the rough area you are in. If that matters to you, stay on Off or Members.

Blocking and reporting

In a one-to-one chat, tap the three dots. Blocking stops both of you from finding or messaging each other. Reporting sends our staff your reason and whatever you write. They are not shown the chat.

In a group, tap the three dots on a message, photo or comment to report it or block the person, or tap the flag at the top to report the group. Reporting a message, photo or comment also sends its text to our staff. Blocking stops one-to-one chats, but the person's group messages stay visible.

Who can read your messages

One-to-one messages and photos are stored on our servers. There is no staff screen that shows them. They are not end-to-end encrypted, so a person with direct access to the database could read them, as with group chats. Do not send anything you would need to be truly secret.

In an emergency

JiraniChat is not an emergency service. Call the police, fire service or ambulance directly.
